Hilary of Poitiers

Hilary of Poitiers
(c. 315–67)
   Bishop, Poet, Theologian and Saint.
Hilary was a native of Poitiers, Gaul, and was consecrated bishop in c. 353. A determined defender of orthodoxy, he was condemned at the Council of Béziers in 356 and banished by the Emperor to Phrygia. He justified his position at the Council of Seleucia, but the Emperor refused to lift the order of banishment. He is mainly remembered for his defence of the Trinity, De Trinitate, against the teachings of arius. He also produced a polemic against the Emperor, Contra Constantum, poems, biblical expositions and histories. In 1851 he was proclaimed a Doctor of the Church. He is generally regarded as the leading Western theologian of his era and the first known Latin hymn-writer.
